About a 30-minute drive from Deshaies, off the coast of Malendure in the town of Bouillante, lies the Cousteau Reserve – a protected marine reserve named after Commander Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who ranked this site among the world’s most beautiful seabeds.
The reserve extends around the Pigeon Islets, two volcanic islets surrounded by shallow coral reefs, making it a site accessible to both experienced divers and snorkelers. Multicolored fish, sea turtles, corals, and occasionally stingrays can be spotted in the generally very clear water.
Several diving clubs based in Malendure offer guided dives with equipment suitable for all skill levels, as well as glass-bottom boat tours for those who prefer to observe the seabed without getting in the water. For snorkeling, you can also rent a mask and snorkel right on Malendure Beach and take a shuttle to the islets.
