Based in Deshaies, on the Leeward Coast, you’re ideally situated to explore all of Basse-Terre—the wildest and most mountainous part of Guadeloupe. Here are a few must-see spots to extend your exploration beyond the village.
The Crossing Route. This legendary road crosses Guadeloupe National Park from west to east, winding through a dense tropical forest dotted with hiking trails and spectacular viewpoints. Half a day is enough to fully enjoy it, with a few stops along the way.
The Carbet Falls. Among the tallest waterfalls in the Caribbean, the Carbet Falls can be explored via hiking trails of varying difficulty, depending on which waterfall you choose. A must-see for nature lovers—be sure to wear appropriate footwear.
La Soufrière. This active volcano, the highest point in the archipelago, can be climbed via a trail suitable for experienced hikers—allow half a day for the round trip. The summit, which is often shrouded in clouds, offers a memorable experience for anyone who enjoys high-altitude hiking.
Basse-Terre and Vieux-Fort. The town of Basse-Terre, the archipelago’s historic capital, is worth a visit for its colonial architecture and Fort Delgrès, which overlooks the bay. A little further south, Vieux-Fort offers a lovely view of Les Saintes on clear days.
The coast, from Pointe-Noire to Bouillante. On the way back down to Deshaies along the coast, several coves and snorkeling spots are worth a stop, particularly around the Cousteau Reserve, one of the best diving and snorkeling spots on the island.
