Deshaies is a village on the leeward coast of Basse-Terre, in Guadeloupe, known for its fishing village atmosphere, colorful houses, and sheltered bay where sailboats and fishing boats are moored. It’s also the perfect starting point for exploring the western part of the island, with its beaches, tropical gardens, and hiking trails.
The village itself is best explored on foot: flower-lined alleys, a church, a small market, and fresh-seafood restaurants along the waterfront set the tone as soon as you arrive. The Deshaies Botanical Garden, located on the hills above the town, is one of Guadeloupe’s most visited attractions: several hectares of tropical plants, koi ponds, an aviary, and a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the bay.
As for beaches, the Grande Anse, just north of the village, stretches nearly a kilometer of golden sand lined with coconut palms—one of the the island's most beautiful beaches. Further south, toward Pointe-Noire and Bouillante, the coastline alternates between tranquil coves and snorkeling spots.
Hiking enthusiasts will find the entrance to the Guadeloupe National Park, with its trails through the rainforest, waterfalls, and—further south—the Soufrière volcano. Deshaies is thus a convenient base for exploring both the coast and the mountainous interior of Basse-Terre.
Finally, the village owes part of its recent fame to the television series Murders in Paradise (Death in Paradise), which has been filmed there for several seasons: several facades in the town regularly serve as backdrops, yet Deshaies has not lost its authenticity as a Creole village.
